BILD Calgary Region Bulletin 2022 – 83

| Subject: | Withdrawal of STANDATA 19-BCI-023 – Manufactured engineered components |
In April 2021, Municipal Affairs issued STANDATA 19 BCI-023 “Manufactured Engineered Components” for engineering seals on engineered wood components including roof trusses, floor trusses and joists constructed in a factory. Some municipalities’ interpretation of this STANDATA would have required engineer seals on truss layouts and profiles as soon as January 1, 2023. This would have created a multi-month backlog for new trusses while adding unnecessary construction delays and new costs.
BILD Alberta in partnership with the Western Wood Truss Association (WWTA) have been advocating for alternative solutions and revisions before the new year, and as a result, Municipal Affairs has withdrawn STANDATA 19 BCI-023 and will provide new guidance in the near future.
Until the new STANDATAs are published, Municipal Affairs, through the Provincial Building Administrator, will take the position that engineering stamps are not required for truss layouts or profiles, as was previously the case.
Municipal Affairs will continue to engage with BILD Alberta, WWTA and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) and the Safety Codes Council in the coming months to clarify when or if engineering stamps on manufactured engineered components will be required. All parties remain engaged and focused on identifying solutions. Updates will be provided as they become available.
BILD Calgary Region would like to thank members for their assistance with this advocacy.
