BILD Calgary Region Bulletin 2026 – 31

| Subject: | Update – Flood Resilience Land Use Bylaw Amendments |
Please find the following bulletin BILD Calgary Region received from The City of Calgary.
We are writing to provide an update on the Flood Resilience Land Use Bylaw Amendments following their consideration at the Infrastructure and Planning Committee (IPC) on April 15, 2026.
After Committee discussion and subsequent Council approval on April 28, the report has been referred back to Administration to allow for additional engagement with communities affected by proposed changes – particularly those in high hazard flood fringe and groundwater flood fringe areas. The report is expected to return to Committee by Q4 2026.
We recognize and appreciate the time, perspectives, and input shared to date by community members and partners to date. The discussions at Committee highlighted the importance of continuing this dialogue to ensure that proposed regulations effectively address flood risk while reflecting community understanding and experience.
This next phase of work will focus on:
- Targeted engagement with high hazard flood fringe and groundwater flood fringe communities (anticipated September 2026)
- Strengthening shared understanding of flood risk and resilience measures
- Refinement of recommendations ahead of returning to Committee by December 2026
While this extends the timeline for adopting flood updated mapping in Calgary’s planning system, it also provides an opportunity to continue to work together to advance thoughtful, effective, and resilient land use regulations for Calgary.
As we move forward, we will share updates and opportunities for engagement as they are confirmed.
In the meantime, we are also in our annual flood season (May 15 – July 15), and we encourage ongoing awareness and preparedness during this period at calgary.ca/floodinfo
Thank you again for your continued partnership and commitment to building a more flood-resilient Calgary.
