On June 20, Administration presented to Council proposed amendment to the Land Use Bylaw. The goal of the proposed amendment is to make it easier for Calgarians to complete exterior installation and cladding retrofits by removing the requirement to obtain a development permit. The land use bylaw originally permitted development permit exemptions for low density residential districts. The proposed amendment expand these exemptions to all land use districts, applying to the full spectrum of building types and scales. Building Permits and inspection will still be required for all projects to ensure compliance with the Alberta Building Code and applicable building occupant, health, durability and safety requirements.

Another goal of the proposed amendments is to formalize climate mitigation and adaptation as valid planning considerations when reviewing a discretionary development permit. The proposed amendments will clarify to the public and applicants that climate mitigation and adaptation are appropriate considerations when applying development permit conditions, or when rendering decisions on an application. No new development authorities are being created with this amendment. In addition, the proposed land use Bylaw Amendment also introduces foundational climate related bylaw definitions.
