| Subject: | BILDCR Update: Feedback Deadline Extended for Calgary’s Draft Street Manual |
BILDCR is excited to share some good news about the feedback submission for Calgary’s Draft Street Manual, originally highlighted in the December 13, 2024 BILDCR Advocacy Newsletter. The City of Calgary has granted an extension for providing input, with the new deadline set for Monday, January 20, 2025.
Below is a recap of the information shared in the newsletter, updated with the revised deadline dates.
As part of the City Building Program, the City of Calgary has developed a new Street Manual, currently referred to as the Complete Streets Policy & Guide, to provide updated guidelines for street design.
Key Details:
- The draft manual consists of eight chapters, including detailed cross-sections and updates to the existing policy.
- An online information session was held on November 26, 2024, to provide an overview of the draft document and explain how stakeholders can contribute feedback.
- Following the session, the City shared the draft manual for review by stakeholders
- To review the draft Street Manual and share your feedback, please follow the links below:
- Summary Sheets (Brief summaries about the purpose and contents found in each chapter)
- Street Manual Draft 3.0: Chapters 1-8 (Eight chapters and over 120 pages of written content)
- Street Manual Draft 3.0: Cross-Sections (13 figures of detailed cross-sections including notes)
- Street Manual Draft 3.0: Annotated Cross-Sections (Description of the major changes and shows all detailed changes proposed for the cross-sections)
Providing Feedback
- The City has provided a feedback template to facilitate the review process.
- Please submit your feedback on the draft Street Manual, using this spreadsheet , to Kathleen.Langtry@bildcr.com by Friday, January 17, 2025. This will allow BILDCR time to consolidate and submit feedback to the City consistent with past practice by the official deadline on Monday, January 20, 2024.
- If you have submitted feedback directly to The City, please forward a copy to Kate at Kathleen.Langtry@bildcr.com to ensure we have a complete record of member input.
Review Questions
When reviewing the draft Street Manual, the City has requested that you consider the following:
- The Street Manual has shifted its focus from daily volume projections to the adjacent land use context and target operating speeds in that desired environment. Is that shift clear and do you understand how it will impact your work?
- The Street Manual proposes simplifying some retrofit and custom cross-section approvals through the design domain approach, only requiring a more robust exception when design minimums cannot be achieved. Do you expect this to make your work easier or more complex?
- As The City prepares for Chapters 9 and 10, which intersection configurations have been the most challenging for you in the current design standards? What elements of intersection design need the most attention?
- Are there other changes you would like to have considered for the Street Manual?
Upcoming Engagement
Your input will help The City prepare for further workshops scheduled in early 2025. If you are interested in participating in additional engagement on the Street Manual, please let Kate (Kathleen.Langtry@bildcr.com) know.
